Signe Schaefer– Former Co-Director of the Biography and Social Art Program; former Director of Foundation Studies at Sunbridge College; founding member of the Center for Life Studies; author of Why on Earth? Biography and the Practice of Human Becoming, co-author of Ariadne’s Awakening and co-editor of More Lifeways; long-time student of human development.

Susan West Kurtz, President of the board
Susan West Kurz was the Executive Director of Dr Hauschka Skin Care, Inc. from 1992-2006, where she oversaw in the United States the development of Dr Hauschka into the preeminent holistic skin care brand it is today. She is the author of “Gardens of Karma: Harvesting Myself Among the Weeds,” “Awakening Beauty the Dr Hauschka Way” and the graphic novel “Beecoming Sophie”, which aims to help school-aged children find ways to help save honeybees. Susan completed the Biography and Social Art certificate program in 2019. Since 2019 she has served on the board at the Center for Biography and Social Art. She previously served on the board of the Biodynamic Gardening and Farming Association from 2012-2017, and as co-chair of the Outloud Committee at the Jamestown Art Center from 2014-2017. Since her apprenticeship at the Meadowbrook Herb Garden in Richmond, RI, in 1972, Susan has been involved with a holistic approach to healing, to business, and to bringing Biodynamic principles and Anthroposophy to the public.

Douglas Garrett, Vice President of the Board
Douglas Garrett is a recent graduate of the three-year biography and social art training. He met anthroposophy during his 33 years in Waldorf education as a parent, trustee and 9 years as a school administrator. He served on the AWSNA Board, and continues to serve Waldorf education in AWSNA school accreditation visits. He teaches and deepens his learning and practice with Rudolf Steiner’s basic books in the Waldorf adult education program at the Waldorf School of Orange County. He lives in San Gabriel, CA with his wife, Susie, and enjoys time with their extended families and three grandchildren. He is learning to ballroom dance, play pickleball, and really loves doing Pilates!

Susan Shurtleff, Treasurer
Susan Shurtleff – Holds a certificate in Biography and Social Art from Sunbridge College. Currently working as an Administrator at Stanton Home, in Great Barrington, MA and operates the Red Door B&B in Lee, MA; Founding Member of Wellspring Living Arts; former Treasurer of The Christian Community, Spring Valley; former Waldorf School Finance Administrator; studied Waldorf education and has a striving interest in anthroposophy for over 25 years; holds a degree in Psychology from Marymount College.

Patricia Rubano, Director of Certificate program
Patricia Rubano, is a faculty member and the current director of the Biography and Social Art Certificate Program, a board member for the Center for Biography and Social Art and represents the training in the International Trainer’s Forum. She studied biographical counseling in England, was a Waldorf early childhood educator for many years and completed the Level One training in Spacial Dynamics.

Kathleen Bowen, Advisor & Faculty
Kathleen Bowen – Certified in Biography and Social Art; Coordinator and one of the founders of the Center for Biography and Social Art; adult educator; master fiber artist and early childhood educator. Being a lover of human beings and possessing a deep interest in anthroposophy she realized she had been training her whole life for this work.

Jennifer Brooks-Quinn, Board Member & Facilitator
Jennifer Brooks-Quinn – is a counselor, adult educator and Waldorf high school teacher with a private counseling and consulting practice. In addition to her extensive work in Waldorf education and anthroposophical studies, she also has completed trainings in biography counseling and psychosynthesis. She has been the director and a faculty member of Foundation Studies in Anthroposophy in Spring Valley, NY and Brooklyn, NY.

Cathy O’Neill, Board Member
Cathy O’Neill has been part of an ongoing biography group since 2012, beginning as coordinator and now co-teaching with 2 other biography workers. She graduated from Waldorf Institute of Southern California teacher training and is currently their board chair, has served on the Westside Waldorf School board for 16 years with 5 as board chair, and graduated from the Center for Biography and Social Art Certificate Program in 2016. Cathy also was a host board member for the ShadeTree Community School in Watts (waylaid by Covid) and has served on the boards of numerous community non-profit organizations for the environment, education, social justice and the arts. Cathy is an Agape Licensed Spiritual Practitioner and a Certified Diversity Trainer with interests in conflict resolution, communication and writing.

Tess Parker, Board Member
Tess Parker is the current Director of Programs for the Anthroposophical Society in America and has been discovering herself and the world through anthroposophy for over a decade. Prior to this role, she spent years tending and stewarding the earth in her roles as co-founder of Common Hands Farm, and the Outdoor Education Teacher and Camp Director at Pasadena Waldorf School. She is a student and collaborator with the elemental kingdom and finds fulfillment and purpose through creating medicines, art, and ritual with plants. As an avid astrologer with an interest in astrosophy and biography work, she finds time to read and interpret birth charts for anyone seeking to understand their own individual cosmic blueprint that accompanies them throughout their life.

Karen Gierlach, Advisor
Karen Gierlach, Holds a degree from London University and trained as a Waldorf teacher at Emerson College in England, where she became inspired to deepen her studies in Anthroposophy. Worked as a foreign language teacher and administrator in Waldorf schools throughout the U.S for 25 years. Attended biography workshops in her early 40’s and became inspired to learn how to become a workshop leader. She has been enjoying working in this field here and in other countries since 2002.

Sarah Putnam, Advisor
Sarah Putnam, Ph.D., received her doctorate in cultural psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has taught in both the university setting and in business. She is a Certified Biography Worker and has extensive experience delivering in-depth coaching, consulting, group facilitation, and training for healthcare, industry, school systems and governmental agencies. A long-time student of anthroposophy, Sarah particularly enjoys discovering the richness and beauty of the inner life with her clients.

Meredith Johanson, Advisor

Polly Sanford, Advisor
Polly Sanford holds a certificate in Biography and Social Art (Sunbridge College), a BFA in Performance Production (Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, WA), and a BA in Political Science (New York University). She has studied Waldorf education and Anthroposophy for more than 30 years, while serving on various Waldorf schools’ and other related initiatives’ boards of trustees, working particularly with administration and outreach.

Anna Rockwell, Administrative & Marketing Coordinator
Anna Rockwell was born in Marin County, California and grew up primarily on the West Coast. She received a BFA in Painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and a MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently a PhD candidate (ABD) at the European Graduate School in the division of Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought.
